Using Wisdom in Answering a Wake-Up Call

Once we are made aware of something in our lives that needs to be addressed, we should use wisdom in coming to decisions that will help us to answer that situation. Today’s Bible Journaling verse says, “How much better is it to get wisdom than gold! and to get understanding rather to be chosen than silver! (Proverbs 16:16 KJV) When God gives us a wake-up call, it is our responsibility to do something about it and to go to Him for wisdom in resolving the issue.

A wake-up call can be anything from a matter that can be quickly addressed or something that may take a lifetime to conquer. We need to use wisdom in how we react to situations. Personally, I pray for God to help me in being quick to recognize this and strive to be like Jesus in my attitude.

Wisdom is something that God values highly. The Enduring Word Commentary on this verse says, “One should make the main pursuit of one’s life to gain wisdom and understanding in the fear of the Lord.” Our verse says wisdom and understanding are more valuable than gold and silver. They cannot be purchased and will take us farther in this life than any amount of wealth. Wisdom comes only from fearing God, “And to man He said, ‘Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; And to depart from evil is understanding.'” (Job 12:28 NASB) The kind of fear spoken of here means to have deep respect and honor toward God. It doesn’t mean that we should be afraid of God, but to come to Him in awe and wonder at who He is and know that He loves us and wants the best for us.

Our first step toward wisdom should be to pray and ask God to help us in the situation. We need to go to Him and listen to what the Holy Spirit is saying to us. God wants us to ask Him for the wisdom we need in living our Christian life. When Solomon asked God for wisdom, God was pleased. (1 Kings 3:10-13) When we ask God to give us wisdom in situations where we need to stop and seek His will and purpose for us, the Holy Spirit inside of us helps us. He is that nudge we feel when faced with a decision that could either keep us on the straight and narrow path or take us down a road we will regret traveling. It is that peace we feel when we have decided to follow a plan that God approves of and wants us to pursue. “And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.” (Isaiah 11:2 ESV)

We also must be in God’s Word, looking for those nuggets of truth that will guide us in overcoming obstacles that could make us stumble and fall. The Bible reveals to us how to live, how to react in situations and guide us in following God’s leading through life. As we are obedient to Him and follow His Word and endeavor to live a life that will bring Him glory and honor, He will help us in resolving those issues that have given us that wake-up call throughout our lives, and then we will be walking in wisdom and understanding.
