Yielding to God’s Will

Today we are looking at the Y in our Pray acronym. Remember, P stands for Praise, R is for Repent, A represents Ask, and Y is for Yield. Our Bible Journaling verse today says, “Delight thyself also in the Lord: and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.” (Psalm 37:4 KJV) When we yield to His Will, we can delight in Him and the plan He has for our lives. When we place ourselves in His Will, we are on the same page in His plan for us and we are filled with His peace, His joy, and His love, and we find that situations in our lives run far smoother than if we followed our own will and desires. I know when I surrender my will to His, daily, everything goes much smoother.

The previous verse says, “Trust in the Lord, and do good; so shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed.” (Psalm 37:3 KJV) Trusting God is the beginning of yielding to His Will. King David is counseling the people to trust God and yield to His Will. Even when things aren’t going our way, we need to realize that He has a plan that is greater than anything we can come up with for ourselves, and it’s for our good, to prosper us and give us hope. (Jeremiah 29:11) The Enduring Word website states, “Instead of worrying and envying, David counseled the man or woman of God to simply trust God and do good for His glory. It is remarkable how quickly we can get distracted from the simple work of trusting God and doing good. Looking at the seeming prosperity of the wicked is one way we are often distracted.”

My first husband’s life verse was Proverbs 3:5-6, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart And do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He will make your paths straight.” (NASB 1995) He lived that Scripture out in his life every single day. He taught me what it means to trust God and His Will. I don’t always get it perfectly, but I’m learning how to trust God even when it doesn’t make any sense to me. My current husband is teaching me different lessons about trusting God. These men were placed into my life by God to teach me that I can’t rely on my understanding only because when I do, I could go off the pathway God has placed in front of me, and I end up outside of His Will.   If I do that, I can’t delight in Him, and I can’t receive the desires of my heart because my desires might be out of line with His desires for me.

The desires of our hearts not only refer to the physical but also to the Spiritual. When we make it a point to Spiritually desire to be more like Jesus, to live a life that reflects the Fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23), to seek out and learn what it is that God wants for our lives, those are granted by God. In his commentary on Psalm 37:4, J. Vernon McGee says, “This was a promise for Israel, but it also applies to us today. I am not sure that He is going to bless your business, but He has already blessed you with spiritual blessings, and He will shower on you all of the spiritual blessings you can contain. Then notice what we are to do. We are to delight ourselves in the Lord.” The Enduring Word website describes delighting in the Lord in this manner, “This means to cheer one’s heart and mind by considering and by faith receiving the multiple blessings of God.” When we do this, we put ourselves in alignment with God’s Will for our lives, and even though, at the time, things may not seem like it’s a good thing, we will find that, in the end, it works out for our good and the result was better than anything we could ever have planned for our own lives.

As we work through our prayer life, Praising, Repenting, Asking, and Yielding, we can find that we are walking closer to the Lord, our will is aligning with His, and we can walk out a life full of joy, peace, and love.
