As we continue in our study on wisdom, the Bible talks about wisdom, not only in the book of Proverbs where we have been studying, but also in the New Testament. The Apostle Paul taught the early church regarding from where the ultimate wisdom comes, “but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.” (1 Corinthians 1:24 ESV) Paul says that Jesus is not only the power of God but also the wisdom of God.
The book of 1 Corinthians was written to deal with some issues in the Corinthian church. Corinth was a city of debauchery, full of people who were out for all the worldly pleasure they could attain. The church was made up of Jews and Greeks who had come to salvation in Jesus. One of the issues was that the Greeks were proud of their learning and philosophy and looked to worldly wisdom instead of looking to God for wisdom. This led to comparisons between different teachers and caused division in the church, as well as some other things that Paul addresses in the book. Paul is emphasizing the importance of gaining wisdom from Jesus, who is the source of wisdom. The Enduring Word website says of this passage, “The Greek culture valued the pursuit of wisdom, usually expressed in high, academic, philosophical terms. They did not value the wisdom expressed in the message of the cross. Their desire for wisdom was not bad, but their rejection of God’s wisdom was.” They had a hard time believing in Christ’s resurrection. The resurrection was a stumbling block to them.
The Colossians had issues with wisdom as well. In the book of Colossians, Paul says, “For I want you to know how great a struggle I have on your behalf and for those who are at Laodicea, and for all those who have not personally seen my face, that their hearts may be encouraged, having been knit together in love, and attaining to all the wealth that comes from the full assurance of understanding, resulting in a true knowledge of God’s mystery, that is, Christ Himself, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.” (Colossians 2:1-3 NASB 1995) He emphasizes that the mystery of God is that Jesus has all wisdom and knowledge. Wisdom and knowledge are found in Him!
Jesus also taught about wisdom. He told the Parable of the Wise and Foolish Builders. (Matthew 7:24-27) One built his house on the rock and one on the sand. If you ask a contractor which would give a better foundation to the house, they will say, “The rock!” Jesus is the Rock upon which our Christian lives are built. He is our foundation. The builder who built his house on the rock was wise, and when the storms came his house stood solid. Whereas the one who built his house on the sand was foolish because when the storms came his house was destroyed. Our lives can be like that when we base our foundation on the things of this world. The wisdom of this world will only lead to destruction, and when the storms of life come, and they will come, our life (the house) will come crashing down around our ears. Building our lives upon the wisdom of Jesus, dedicating our lives to Him, and being obedient and faithful to Him and His Word, will offer us a solid foundation for our lives. Jesus said that when we heed His Word and act upon it, we can be compared to the wise builder, whose house stood firm. However, when we disregard what He has said and refuse to act upon His words, we are like the foolish builder whose house was destroyed.
Are you seeking wisdom? Look to Jesus! He is wisdom! Stand firm on Him and His Word for your life’s foundation! Then when the storms of life come, you will find shelter in Him, and He will help you withstand anything this life can throw at you.
