God’s Steadfast Love

Have you ever known someone who showed steadfast love to others? First, to know the answer to that question, we need to know the definition of the word steadfast. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines steadfast as firmly fixed in place, not subject to change, or firm in belief, determination, or adherence. When we are talking about God’s steadfast love toward us, we mean that God’s love for us is unchanging and lasts for eternity. It describes God because the Bible tells us He IS love. (1 John 4:8)

Our Bible Journaling verse for today says, “For I said, ‘Steadfast love will be built up forever; in the heavens you will establish your faithfulness.’” (Psalm 89:2 ESV) Ethan the Ezrahite wrote this Psalm, and from what I see in my Bible, this is a song he wrote as a hymn of praise to God for the love He shows toward us. The first four verses of Psalm 89 tell us of God’s love and a promise to David to establish his offspring for generations. That promise and the showing of God’s love came from David down through the ages to Jesus. God showed His love to us by sending Jesus to take our place on the cross to pay for our sins. (John 3:16)

Jeremiah says, “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end;  they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” (Lamentations 3:22-23 ESV) God’s love is shown in His faithfulness to us and His promises. From the beginning of time, God had a plan to show the world just how much He loves us. His love is unchanging! We can depend on His love for us. He will never change how He feels about us, no matter what. Even when we disappoint Him, He still loves us! The Apostle Paul also talked about God’s love. “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8 KJV)

As I look at our Bible Journaling verse, Ethan is sharing His experience about God’s love and faithfulness. He has experienced that steadfast love and He wanted to share with others the faithfulness and unchanging love of God. As we read about how God loves us, we in turn must endeavor to show love like Him. We show His love to others when we allow His light to shine through us when we deal with others as God deals with us, sharing loving kindness with those around us.

God shows us by example how to love others and His love becomes a shelter during trials and storms. “How precious is Your lovingkindness, O God! And the children of men take refuge in the shadow of Your wings. (Psalm 36:7 NASB 1995) If His love were not constant and unchanging, we would never be able to take refuge in His love or feel safe from harm. But His love for us is so strong and never-ending, that we find it a haven in which we can rest.

I must admit that when I do a self-evaluation, there are times when the way I love someone may change, depending on the circumstances. That’s when I need to go to God, confess my sin, ask His forgiveness, and try to love as He does, with a love that is steadfast and never changing.

Romans 8:35-39 shows us how deep, rich, and wide is God’s love. Paul tells us that NOTHING can separate us from God’s love! No matter what, God will always love us. That is steadfast love, my friend! How grateful I am for His steadfast love!
