Reflections

Sometimes God wakes me in the middle of the night or in the morning with a song. This morning He woke me with a couple of old songs that I haven’t sung in a very long time. In fact, they have been around since I was a little girl. One song is called, No One Ever Cared for Me Like Jesus. George Beverly Shea, who used to sing on the Billy Graham Crusades, used to sing it quite a lot. The other song he also sang is called, God Hath not Promised.

As these songs were running through my mind, I began to reflect on from where Jesus has brought me to where I am now. I think it’s a good thing for us to take stock of our journey with Him occasionally. I accepted Jesus into my heart when I was 11 years old. I have often said that my journey with Jesus has been an adventure. He has taken me places and through things that I never in a million years would have foreseen or expected. The ride has been incredible!

When I was younger, there was a segment of Christianity that stated that once a person became a Christian, there would be no heartache, no pain, life would be a bed of roses, and you would never experience trials. Satan would never bother you again. How wrong that is! It isn’t even Scriptural! Jesus himself stated in John 16:33 that, “in this life you WILL have tribulation” (emphasis mine). A problem free life is not guaranteed. What He has promised is that He will be with you through the struggles and trials. The lyrics to God Hath not Promised are as follows:

God hath not promised skies always blue,
Flower-strewn pathways all our lives through;
God hath not promised sun without rain,
Joy without sorrow, peace without pain.

CHORUS:
But God hath promised strength for the day,
Rest for the labor, light for the way,
Grace for the trials, help from above,
Unfailing sympathy, undying love.

God hath not promised we shall not know
Toil and temptation, trouble and woe;
He hath not told us we shall not bear
Many a burden, many a care.

CHORUS

God hath not promised smooth roads and wide,
Swift, easy travel, needing no guide;
Never a mountain, rocky and steep,
Never a river, turbid and deep.

CHORUS

For me, that is such a comfort! Life will be hard, that is a given. But I don’t have to do life alone! Jesus walks with me! Those without Christ do not have that assurance. They have to struggle through without His love, guidance, or help. I can’t imagine how difficult life must be for them. No wonder there are so many unhappy people in this world!

I have a guarantee though. Jesus loves me, and He wants the best for me. His love is indescribable! He brings peace, joy, and unlimited favor to my life. He blesses me daily and I am so grateful. It is with thankfulness in my heart that I can sing, No One Ever Cared for Me Like Jesus! Here are the lyrics to the song:

I would love to tell you what I think of Jesus,
For I found in Him a friend so strong and true;
I would tell you how He changed my life completely,
He did something that no other friend could do.

CHORUS:
No one ever cared for me like Jesus,
There’s no other friend so kind as He,
No one else could take the sin and darkness from me,
O how much He cares for me.

All my life was full of sin when Jesus found me,
All my heart was full of misery and woe;
Jesus placed His strong and loving arms around me,
And He led me in the way I ought to go.

CHORUS

Ev’ry day He comes to me with new assurance,
More and more I understand His words of love;
But I’ll never know just why He came to save me,
Till some day I see His blessed face above.

CHORUS

So, this morning I wake with gratefulness in my heart for the God who loves me, and who promises to “never leave me nor forsake me.” (Hebrews 13:5) He is my best friend, and I know I can never go wrong in trusting Him!
