This month we are going to look at our greatest calling. God calls each one of us to different tasks, giftings, and talents. But the greatest calling from God is the call to become His child. John 1:12 says, “But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name.” (KJV)
When we accept Jesus as our Savior, it means we surrender our lives into His hands. We allow Him to take over, be the One who sits on the throne of our hearts. We relinquish control. That isn’t always easy, and I think that’s why the KJV says that He gives power to become children of God. When we become Born-Again, the Holy Spirit comes to live inside of us, and it is through the Holy Spirit that we receive the power to do the things God calls us to do. Acts 1:8 tells us this, “but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you;” The word “power” here in the Greek is “Dunamis”, it’s where we get our word “dynamite” from and can be described as potential or ability. I like the idea that the power we receive from the Holy Spirit is dynamite power. It’s an explosive power that helps us achieve the things God calls us to do.
When I first became a Christian, I heard several pastors on TV talk about how once we give our hearts to Jesus, life will be a breeze. They said we would never encounter problems. I soon discovered that they were as wrong as could be. They must not have read John 16:33, “These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” (KJV) We need the power of the Holy Spirit to live this life. We need the power of the Holy Spirit to follow Jesus and accomplish all that He has called us to. Sometimes He calls us into areas where we have never gone, new territory. That can be scary, and we need the power He gives us to step out in faith to follow that calling He has placed in our lives. We need that power just to live in this world and walk through the troubles we face.
He also has called Born-Again Believers to reach out to those who don’t know Him and share what He has done for us. We are to tell them how we became a Believer. We are to “make disciples” (Matthew 28:19) throughout the whole world, beginning with the people with whom we have daily contact. You say, “But I can’t do that. I can’t talk to someone one-on-one about Jesus.” That’s where the power of the Holy Spirit comes into play. He gives us the courage and power to witness to the lost around us.
If you haven’t responded to God’s call to be His child, today is a good day to accept Jesus as your Savior. 2 Corinthians 6:2 says, “For he says, “In the time of my favor I heard you, and in the day of salvation I helped you.” I tell you, now is the time of God’s favor, now is the day of salvation.” (NIV) Jesus is knocking at your heart’s door, waiting for you to open the door and allow Him to take residence in your heart and life. Won’t you ask Him in? It will be the best decision you will ever make.
