This month we are looking at “Uncovering Your Plus One”. You ask, “What’s a Plus One?” A Plus one is an unexpected blessing that God bestows upon His children. Our Bible Journaling verse today says, “And the Lord thy God will make thee plenteous in every work of thine hand, in the fruit of thy body, and in the fruit of thy cattle, and in the fruit of thy land, for good: for the Lord will again rejoice over thee for good, as he rejoiced over thy fathers:” (Deuteronomy 30:9 KJV) I like the way the NASB puts it, “Then the Lord your God will prosper you abundantly in all the work of your hand, in the offspring of your body and in the offspring of your cattle and in the produce of your ground, for the Lord will again rejoice over you for good, just as He rejoiced over your fathers;” (NASB 1995)
It’s always nice to receive surprise blessings from the Lord. It reminds us that God loves us, and He has His Hand in our lives. I’m sure each one of us could tell of instances where God gave us an unexpected blessing that just “wowed” us. Just recently, my husband and I received such a blessing. We had a camper we had been trying to sell. We had been trying to sell it for four years, and it looked like we would never get it sold. We didn’t even have a for-sale sign on it. A few weeks ago, a gentleman saw my husband in the garage and came up and asked him if the camper was for sale. My hubby said it was. The man gave him an envelope and said he would like to purchase the camper. When we looked in the envelope, it was filled with $100.00 bills; he paid for it in cash! We were so shocked. It came out of the blue! God brought that man to us and sold our camper for us! That is what we call a Plus One!
Our verse today tells us that God showers blessings upon us. I like how the NASB says that God will prosper us abundantly! He doesn’t do anything halfway! When He blesses us, He goes all-out!
Deuteronomy 30:10 says that if we are obedient to God, these blessings will come to us. He blesses those who are faithful and listen to His leading. As we looked last month at the calling God has on our lives, we learned that we need to be listening to God’s voice to fulfill that calling, the same is true about obedience and receiving His blessings. When we are listening to His voice and following His guidance, we are being obedient to His call. It is then that He can do more than we can imagine. Ephesians 3:20 says, “Now to Him who is able to [carry out His purpose and] do superabundantly more than all that we dare ask or think [infinitely beyond our greatest prayers, hopes, or dreams], according to His power that is at work within us,” (AMP) If He can work in our lives in a way that is far above what we can even imagine, He can bless us far more than we can even think of.
This month we are going to talk about looking for those unexpected blessings. We need to be super-aware of those little things that just pop up unexpectedly. It could be something so simple like the beauty of nature around us, or as complex as a miracle healing, or the solution to a problem that comes out of the blue.
Today, as you go about your day, be aware of those little Plus One blessings that God places in your life. Not only will it make your day, but it will also give God honor as you relay how He has blessed your life.
