This month we are talking about looking for “Plus One’s”, those hidden blessings that God sends our way. Our verse today is Proverbs 25:2, “It is the glory of God to conceal a matter, But the glory of kings is to search out a matter.” Sometimes we have unexpected blessings come our way, and it is a treasure! But we don’t always see those “Plus One’s.” Why? Could it be that we aren’t looking for them?
Our Scripture tells us that God sometimes conceals things so that He can receive the glory when we find them. We receive the blessing when we discover those hidden things that God graciously shows us. Those hidden blessings can be anything from unexpectedly finding extra money in our wallets to finding a hidden nugget in Scripture that helps us understand God’s Word better, or something else.
Some people need to be reminded of the good things around them, and then they notice them. When we intentionally look for blessings from God, we will see them more frequently.
In my Bible Journaling artwork today, I used the girl and her dog, searching intently for her “Plus One.” We are to be like detectives, seeking out blessings from God. Whether it’s looking for the beauty of nature around us or studying God’s Word, we need to be diligently searching for those nuggets. Just as in Luke 15, Jesus spoke parables about finding lost things. The person in each of the parables looked diligently for what they had lost. They searched; they intentionally looked for it. We should also intentionally look for those unexpected blessings that God wants to show us. The Lord encourages us to seek, knock, and ask for His “plus One” blessings. (Luke 11:19)
In finding “Plus One” blessings in Scripture, we should not just read the Bible, but study it, digging into it to find those things of deeper meaning, looking for the meat of the Word. The Bible tells us that we are to, “Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” (2 Timothy 2:15 KJ21) The NASB says, “Be diligent.” Really get into the nitty-gritty of the Word and find the truth of Scripture.
If we are having difficulty in seeing those blessings in Scripture, we should pray as David prayed, “Open my eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of your law. (Psalm 119:18 ESV) As we search God’s Word, we will find Scripture that will help us in our walk with the Lord. We will find that we will do as Peter encouraged, “But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ…” (2 Peter 3:18 ESV) As we mature in our faith, we will find blessings in Scripture that we can hold on to and bring joy to our hearts. When we do this, God receives glory, and we receive blessings above anything we could even imagine.
So today, look for that “Plus One” that God wants to show you, whether it’s just a little thing like your favorite food or a treasure from God’s Word. You will be blessed, and your life will be made sweeter because of it.
